At COP28, Lead for Earth played a pivotal role, with significant discussions led by various delegates, including a notable session facilitated with Indian youth and Shri Bhupender Yadav Ji, India’s Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change.
Speaking at the World Climate Summit during COP28 was both an honor and a responsibility for Vikrant. Addressing the audience on behalf of millions of youth, including thousands of children, was a profound experience. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to voice collective concerns and advocate for a sustainable future.
The organization hosted eight different side events focusing on climate finance, NDCs, mitigation, and topics relevant to the Asia Pacific region, including loss and damage.
COP28 also marked a historic moment, as the summit culminated in the first-ever global agreement to move away from fossil fuels, aiming to limit the temperature rise to 1.5°C. Despite challenges in achieving a more ambitious fossil fuel phase-out and concerns over natural gas and carbon capture strategies, the conference saw substantial progress. Over $7 billion was pledged to aid the food industry in the climate battle, and efforts to tackle methane emissions were initiated by major oil companies.
India’s impactful presence at COP28 was underscored by its proposal to host COP33, showcasing leadership in sustainable initiatives such as Green Credits for public participation, the Global River Cities Alliance for shared river management practices, and the Green Rise initiative to engage youth in climate action. The LeadIT 2.0 initiative further emphasized India’s commitment to an inclusive industry transition, highlighting the nation’s role in shaping a sustainable future amidst global climate challenges.
