SB58 (UNFCCC Intersessional in Bonn, Germany)
At SB58 in Bonn, Lead for Earth showcased its commitment to climate action, engaging in critical discussions on loss and damage, adaptation, and finance. Our advocacy for science-based policies and stronger financial commitments underscored our role in advancing global climate goals towards COP 28.
Our active participation in the Subsidiary Body 58 (SB 58) meeting at the Bonn Climate Change Conference was a testament to our deepening commitment to environmental protection and climate action. Here’s a summary of the key developments and our contributions:
1. Challenges and Progress: The Bonn Conference presented a challenging agenda with over 20 items and multiple events. Despite this, significant strides were made, particularly in discussions aligned with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C target.
2. Key Issues and Lead for Earth’s Involvement:
– Loss and Damage Fund: We engaged in discussions on creating a fund for countries severely impacted by climate disasters. Although no consensus was reached on the Santiago Network’s host, our involvement helped push the conversation forward.
– Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA): We contributed to the dialogue around the GGA, advocating for a robust framework, though progress here was limited.
– IPCC’s AR6: Our team underscored the importance of the AR6 findings, advocating for science-based approaches in climate policy.
3. Global Stocktake: We participated actively in the first Global Stocktake under the Paris Agreement, emphasizing the need for a clear direction to enhance global climate action.
4. Finance Discussions: Our representatives contributed to dialogues on loss and damage finance and the new collective quantified goal on climate finance, underscoring the need for actionable commitments.
5. Mitigation Efforts: Notably, the mitigation work programme was missing from the agenda. We voiced our concerns about the need to address vital emission reduction strategies and the phase-out of fossil fuels.
6. Expectations for COP 28: Looking ahead to COP 28 in Dubai, we are preparing to advocate for resolution on the key issues discussed at SB 58, especially regarding financial commitments and operationalizing the loss and damage fund.
7. Outcomes and Impact: The Bonn Conference was a crucial platform for us to further our mission in environmental sustainability. The discussions and outcomes will significantly shape our future strategies and actions, as we continue to play a vital role in the global movement for climate action and policy development.
